Creativity vs Artistry

Just a random thought Andy and I mulled over at lunch today.  Is there a difference between being an artist and being creative?

I think there is.  I think creativity is the practical side of artistry–the side that can come up with wild and crazy ideas to communicate simple truths as well as the best way to pull it off.

Being an artist is more of an idea–a state of being, I guess.  Being a dreamer.  A big-picture kind of person.

To me, creativity speaks of action and artistry speaks of thought.  I know a lot of artistic people, and I also know a lot of creative people–all amazing folks.  But some are more artistic (dreamers) and others are more creative (doers).

I don’t know why I was thinking about this.  It was just something that popped up in my mind, and I felt like I needed to write it down.  I’m not even sure it’s a complete thought . . . .

I like your blog Amy… you always have a great perspective, and you are an awesome writer. But For this post, I have exact opposite thoughts on creativity and artistry. To me, being creative is being thoughtful, and being Artistic, is actually playing out those creative thoughts to actually CREATE something. I feel like I am creative….I have a lot of ideas that I think are pretty swell, but the artist lacks in me…I cannot make or produce well these things that I think of.

I guess from your perspective I am artistic, but lack the creative field.

    Interesting thoughts amy. Love ya.

I love perspective and connotation . . . because different words mean different things to different people. (Honestly, Jenny, I think you’re one of the most creative people I’ve ever known–as well as the most artistic.)

This post was really strange because I was thinking about creativity and related things and then Pastor Hoover preached on it the next day. I think I like his definition of “creativity” better than anything I came up with!! I’ve been meaning to get back on here and expand on this thought because I really didn’t have time to develop it the way I wanted to.

And I’m very glad you read this thing . . . most of my ramblings don’t make any sense. =)
